Top 10 Alternative, Eccentric Christmas Songs

As the Christmas holiday approaches, radio stations will continue to play the same, sometimes repeating, Christmas songs until that day.  This is not to say that these original songs are still classic, they are, but what are some of your options if you want something different - and still represent the holiday season?  The options that you have are actually a lot more wide than you would think.  Therefore, in honor of the holiday season and all those who love Christmas, here are some alternative songs, which leave the realm of the traditional songs, that are played on the radio from the end of November to the end of December.

10. Don't Shoot Me Santa - The Killers

This awesome songs from the Killers was the 2007 follow-up from their first Christmas song, "Great Big Sled."  This song is obviously supposed to be comical in nature, yet it still shows the clear message of a younger man reverting back to his childhood and struggling with those who have picked on him in his life.  The lyrics show the time in the lead singer's life, Brandon Flowers, where he was struggling with suicidal thoughts.  All in all, you won't be hearing this song remade by any other artist, which is how it should be.

9. Peppermint Winter - Owl City

From the artist, who has brought the catchy chart-topping tracks like "Fireflies" and "Good Time," Owl City provides another catchy song that will be stuck in your head from the first listen.  The song definitely insights the memories of past Christmases and what we all remember about them, such as talking about his "mean older brother" shoving snow down his coat.  This song from beginning to end is a feel good Christmas song, which everyone should take some time to listen to.

8. Christmas Lights - Coldplay

There's nothing really to say about Coldplay that already hasn't been said.  Chris Martin's vocals and the instrumental are just more reasons why Coldplay will go down as one of the greatest bands from our generation.  This song is the story of a lonely man on Christmas who hopes that his love will return and calls for the Christmas lights to help him, "maybe they'll bring her back to me."  Definitely give this song a listen.

7. Christmas Everyday - Gerald Walker

Rap and Christmas music normally don't go together, but the gentle lyrics of Gerald Walker definitely makes this odd relationship work.  This song is one track from his two Christmas mixtapes, which are free to download on Datpiff.com.  I have placed the links below so that you can download them.  This song in particular is my favorite, because it insights the feelings that Christmas provides - optimism and hope, which Gerald wishes would continue everyday.

6. The Red Baron vs. Snoopy - Flying Guardsmen

Snoopy and the Peanuts gang has become a vital part of the Christmas tradition with their specials being played every holiday season.  This great song from the Flying Guardsmen brings three great things together: Snoopy, World War I, and Christmas.  The song is a great song if you're a Peanuts fan, and you probably have already listened to it, and will continue the tradition for Christmas' to come.

5. Camouflage and Christmas Lights - Rodney Carrington

Recently this song was remade by Reed Robertson, the son of Jase and Missy Robertson, who performed it on Duck Dynasty's Christmas album, titled Duck the Halls.  This version is by Rodney Carrington and is by far one of my fast growing songs that I love.  It take the story of troops not being home for Christmas, and is emotional from beginning to end.

4. Christmas in Harlem Ft Jim Jones, Vado, Pusha T, Cyhi Tha Prince, Musiq Soulchild, Teyana Taylor & Big Sean - Kanye West

Back during Kanye's promotion of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he was releasing a single every Friday and called them G.O.O.D. Fridays.  This track was one of the many that were released in his several month span of releasing these tracks.  It's another example where Christmas and rap work well together.  Plus the lengthy cast that joins Kanye, and Teyana Taylor singing the chorus makes for a beautifully lengthy rap track.

3. Boots - The Killers

Here is another one of those Christmas songs from the Killers, and it's a great one.  The song starts off with a sample from the movie A Wonderful Life, and plays into the track.  Brandon Flowers' uses his lyrical skills to tell a story about his childhood and the senses that surrounded him during Christmas time - from cinnamon candles to his mom in the kitchen.  Either way this track is another example of the Killers' brilliance.  And you can purchase their (Red) Christmas EP below!!

2.  Christmas Canon - Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Trans-Siberian Orchestra has been re-creating the world of Christmas music for years, and this song is one of their greatest.  This song beautifully uses a kid's choir and an instrumental that is powering throughout.  Make sure to check this one out and the rest of their albums.  Great song!!

1.   Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosby

Even though these two songs by themselves have been some of the most popular Christmas songs, this combination brings something completely different.  The voices of David Bowie and Bing Crosby are beautiful as they mix these two classic songs together.  Although these songs are two classics, this duet between the two artists will never be duplicated.  Make sure to check out the video and watch two legends at work.  You can download it below.
